Obituary of Ivan J. Mastin

Springwater – Ivan J. Mastin, 90 years of age, passed away Saturday morning September 23, 2017.    

Ivan was born December 4, 1926 the son of Lemon and Clara (Caskey) Mastin.  He grew up in the Honeoye area and moved to his current residence of Springwater in 1952.  Ivan and Virginia Grouse were married April 30th, 1949 in Springwater and together have celebrated over 68 years of marriage.  Ivan was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy from April 19, 1946 until his honorable discharge February 17, 1948.  Throughout the years, Ivan worked at different jobs, all of which revolved around farming.  For many many years he owned and operated his own dairy farm in Springwater.  After that, he hauled bulk milk for Polly-O in Cohocton and once he retired from that he began driving truck for Tri-Ag only 3 days later!! Once he decided to stop that, he worked for Walker Farms until he was 89 years old!

Ivan was very active in his community as well, being a member of the Springwater Grange; the International Order of the Odd Fellows; past president and member of the Springwater Town Council for 30 years; and he drove ambulance for many years.  He also was a member of the Covered Bridge / Evergreen Cemetery board for 39 years; 26 as vice president and 13 as trustee.  Ivan enjoyed many different hobbies including playing basketball, shooting firearms, smoking cigars and antique tractor pulling.  He built a pond and developed his property with his bull dozer he was very proud of as many family events have taken place there over the years.  Ivan will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.

Ivan was pre-deceased by his parents, Lemon and Clara; his grandson, James “Jimmy” Mastin; and siblings, Elwin Mastin, Harold “Mike” Mastin, Otto Mastin, Irene Patterson, Onolee Jenks and Earl Mastin.  He is survived by his wife, Virginia Mastin of Springwater; his children, Michael (Sandy) Mastin of Conesus, David (Faith) Mastin of Springwater and Mary Lou (Mark) McKelvey of Springwater; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Frank) Kearney of SC, Brandon (Kerri) Mastin of Springwater, Lauren (Marc) Valerio of Penfield, Adam McKelvey of Penfield, Allysyn (Michael) O’Connell of Greece, Ryan (Jaclyn) McKelvey of Rochester, Colin McKelvey of Rochester and Hannah McKelvey of Springwater; his great-grandchildren, Justin, Ashlyn, Brynlee, Giuliana, Giacomo, Liam, Shae and Rowan; along with many nieces and nephews.  

Ivan’s funeral service will be private and at the convenience of his family.  Contributions in memory of Ivan J.
