Obituary of Elizabeth Mae Rouse

Wallace / Cohocton - Elizabeth Mae Rouse, “Betty” 97 years of age, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 1, 2025 at ELCOR Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Horseheads. Betty was born September 11, 1927 in Cohocton the daughter of William and Mae (Bill) Schlick. She grew up in Cohocton and eventually moved to Wallace. She has resided in the Cohocton/Wallace areas her entire life. In her early life, Betty worked at the Woodcroftery hand painting wooden bowls. She also worked as a finisher at The Gunlocke Company in Wayland for a few years. Betty’s love was art though. She became a self-employed Folk Artist. She was a gifted artist having painted many intricate works. Betty’s talent also crossed over to other areas. She made a hand carved carousal with moving parts, handmade carved wooden dolls; especially Emmett the Clown, beadwork and she enjoyed working her magic with all kinds of hand tools. Betty was an avid fly fisherman; enjoyed antiquing while hunting for old bottles, coins and arrowheads. She was also a seamstress making many articles and she especially loved “all her cats!” Betty and Roger Rouse were married April 16, 1948 in Avoca and together celebrated over 65 years of marriage prior to Roger passing away June 19, 2013. Betty was pre-deceased by her parents, William and Mae Schlick; her husband Roger Rouse; her brother and sister in law Robert and Jean Schlick; and her brother in law, George Camillo. She is survived by her sister Alice Camillo of Greece; her nephew Alan Schlick of Hornell; her niece Nancy (Mike) Larsen of Cohocton; several great nieces and nephews and extended family; and of course, all her cats! Betty’s family and friends may call Friday March 7, 2025 from 2-4pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home. Betty’s funeral service will be at the conclusion of calling hours at 4pm at the funeral home. Committal and interment will take place privately at Mapleview Cemetery in Cohocton.
