Obituary of Lois Ann Ballinger
Avoca – Lois Ann (Miles) Ballinger, 82 years of age, passed away Thursday night, September 4, 2025 at St. James Hospital in Hornell.
Lois was born April 2, 1943 in Corning the daughter of Dorr L. and Dorothy L (Buchanan) Miles. She grew up in Elmira and moved to Bath in the mid 1960’s. She remained in Bath until 2015 when she moved to Avoca and has resided there ever since. She was a high school graduate of Elmira Free Academy and she worked at the Bath Veterans Administration for over 20 years. In her younger years, Lois worked for the old Murphy’s Bowling Alley.
Lois enjoyed television game shows and she was a “foodie!” She loved Laughy Taffy, Tops Muffins, Tootsie Pops, Donuts from Entenmann’s, chocolate chip cookies, her nightly ice cream and “burnt hot dogs!” However the love of her life was her grandchildren. Spending time with them and taking them to Keuka Lake swimming were her favorites.
Lois was pre-deceased by her parents, Dorr and Dorothy Miles; her companion of 30 years John “Jack” Noble; her brothers Richard and Donnie Miles and her sister Linda Havens. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Jo Hough of Avoca; her grandchildren, Levi Hough (Taylor Rice) of Bath, Jasmine (Hunter) Lee of Bath, Destany Hough (Jonathan Bailey) of Beaver Dams, NY and Daisy Hough of Rochester; her great grandson Halston; her half-sister, Colleen Spence of Binghamton; her lifelong family friend who was like a daughter to her, Rebecca Hammond; her best friend Diane Dalby; her dear coworkers and friends from the VA and Elderwood; along with cousins, nieces and nephews: and a special thank you to Pam Reppert for everything she has done.
A Celebration of Life will take place in the Spring of 2026 and will be announced when finalized. She will be interred next to her companion John “Jack” Noble at Nondaga Cemetery in Bath next spring. Contributions in memory of Lois Ann Ballinger may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place • Memphis, TN 38105.
