Obituary of Richard J. Kurtz

Wayland – Richard J. Kurtz, “Smurf” - 75 years of age, passed away Monday September 29, 2025 at his home in Wayland. Richard was born July 21, 1950 in Syracuse the son of Carl and Marion (Schillo) He grew up in Syracuse and then joined the United States Army serving his country while actively deployed to Vietnam. Upon his return from Vietnam, Smurf moved to Rochester and resided there for many years. Smurf and Kathy Allen were married on May 13, 1988 and have celebrated over 37 years together. In February of 1991 they moved to Wayland and have resided there ever since. Smurf was a roofer for Local #22 out of Rochester retiring after many years of work. Smurf's hobbies included watching just about any sports on television. He was a New York Yankees fan, New York Giants fan, New York Rangers fan, and any sport that had to do with Syracuse University – he loved them all. He was even a golf fan, watching it whenever he could get away with it! Smurf was also a Dale Earnhardt fan. Another thing he loved doing – taking walks on his “Happy Trails!” Smurf was pre-deceased by his parents, Carl and Marion Kurtz; his daughter Kali Gettys: his brothers, John and Charles Kurtz; and his sister in law, Jane Kurtz. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Kurtz of Wayland; his children, Richard Kurtz of Dansville, Krislin Mitchell (Chad Snyder) of Wayland and Kylene Kurtz (Kyle Sweet) of Livonia; his grandchildren, Ted, Isaac, Elaina, Dakota, Lucas, Hunter, Maelyn, Kyra and Kayden; his great granddaughter, Kailynn; his brother, Michael Kurtz of CT; along with many nieces and nephews. Smurf's celebration of life will be Sunday October 19, 2025 at the Perkinsville Fire Department during the afternooon.
