Cohocton – Wayland – Thomas G. Leibenguth, 77 years of age, passed away early Saturday morning, October 18, 2025 at his home in Cohocton.
Tom was born January 30, 1948 in Wayland the son of Gordon “Red” and Sylvia (Armstrong) Leibenguth. Tom and Sharon Schneider were married May 29, 1993 at the Atlanta Presbyterian Church and have celebrated over 32 years of marriage. Tom's employment career included many years at Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation. After Foster Wheeler Tom became a truck driver and worked for Owens Brothers and then Griffith Oil.
Tom grew up in Wayland and was a Wayland Central School graduate. He resided in Wayland for a majority of his life and in their retirement years Tom and Sharon became snowbirds to Florida. Eventually they became permanent residents of Florida and most recently moved back to Cohocton.
Tom was an avid camper. He loved the time spent camping with all his family wherever it was. Collecting trains was a favorite past time and his love for trains included traveling around the country on a train trip. Collecting Hess trucks was also a favorite of Tom's. Every year for Christmas since 1987 he would buy the yearly edition for his sons and step sons. Tom was a life member, past Chief and past Assistant Chief of the Wayland Fire Department. He also coached baseball back in the day when his sons were young.
Tom was pre-deceased by his parents, Gordon and Sylvia Leibenguth; his step mother, Eva Leibenguth; his sister Lisa Shetler; his brother, Norbert Leibenguth; and his brother in law, George Branch. Tom is survived by his wife, Sharon Leibenguth of Cohocton; his sons, Jeffery Leibenguth (Patty Mouthrup) of Greece and Randall “Roo” (Laurie) Leibenguth of Wayland; his step sons, Mark (Dawn) Palmer of Canandaigua and Michael (Rachel) Palmer of Cohocton; his grandchildren, Raquel (Roger) Holloway, Quinton, Sheldon (Emma) Palmer, Owen (Lily) Palmer and Tristan Palmer; his great grandchildren, Theo, Violet and Elliot; his sister, Arlene “Susie” Branch of Irondequoit; his sister in law, Barbara Leibenguth of Rochester; along with many nieces and nephews and especially his dogs, Missy and Marlo.
Tom's family and friends may call Tuesday October 21, 2025 from 4-7pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Tom on Wednesday October 22, 2025 at 10am. Committal and interment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wayland.
