Springwater – Joyce P. O’Neil 92 years of age, passed away Sunday October 19, 2025 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.

Joyce was born December 9, 1932 in Springwater the daughter of Francis and Grace (Fisher) Holmes. She grew up in Springwater and resided there her entire life. In fact she lived in the same house since the mid 1950’s. In her early years, Joyce worked at The Gunlocke Company and then began a very long career working for the Valley News, a local news publication.

Joyce and John O’Neil were married in 1952 and celebrated over 48 years of marriage prior to John passing away in the year 2000. Joyce took care of her mother Grace for many years. She was her primary caretaker and would take her everywhere with her. Joyce was a collector of antiques, especially miniature kerosene lamps; she enjoyed refinishing furniture, bowling, NASCAR and taking long rides along the countryside. Joyce’s passion was photography. As a member of the Springwater Historical Society she took many photos of the Springwater area and captured the town’s history, charm and character. As written by a friend of Joyce, “Joyce is almost singlehandedly responsible for the many, many Floyd Ingraham photos that have come to define Springwater’s history in the early 1900’s. Thank you Joyce for all your contributions to our historical society.”

Joyce was pre-deceased by her parents, Francis and Grace Holmes; her husband John O’Neil; and her sister in law, Sue Holmes. She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Shirley) O’Neil of Wayland and Jan O’Neil (Jackie Malone) of Springwater; her grandchildren, Dan O’Neil of Wayland, Nicholas (Deanna) O’Neil of Middlesex, Rose Marie Bourgoine (Shannon Brooks) of Scottsburg and Tom (Gabrielle) Bourgoine of Livonia; her great-grandchildren, Finley, Onyx, Silas, Victoria, Gavin and Teaghan; her brothers, William Holmes of Wayland and Wayne (Vada) Holmes of Springwater; along with nieces and nephews.

Joyce’s family and friends may call Tuesday October 28, 2025 from 11am-2pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Her funeral service will immediately follow at 2pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery the following day.
