Obituary of Carole A. Schwingel

Rochester / Wayland – Carole Ann Schwingel, 88, passed away November 25, 2025 after a period of hospice care while a resident of the LEO Center for Caring at St. Ann’s Community in Irondequoit, NY. Carole had been a resident of St. Ann’s Community since 2023; she was transferred to the LEO Center for Caring for palliative care in May 2025. Carole was born January 20, 1937 in Wayland, NY, the daughter and eldest child of Dwight and Rita (Schmitz) Veith. She grew up in Wayland, was a graduate of St. Joseph’s school and a 1954 graduate of Wayland Central School. In May 1955, Carole Ann and Philip Schwingel were wed at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland and celebrated 70 years of marriage this year. She was so pleased to have had an officiant from their wedding, Fr. (now Monsignor) Gerald Krieg, bless her in person this summer when it was learned that he, too, is a resident at St. Ann’s. She is survived by her husband, Philip, who resides at the memory care unit at St. Ann’s Cherry Ridge Community in Webster; brother Ronald (Sharon) Veith of Camden, AR; daughter Wendy Schwingel of Chapel Hill, NC; and sons Alan (Nory) of Mission Viejo, CA; David (Darla) of Henrietta; Brian (Marlene) of Horseheads, and Gary (Kathleen) of Webster; her grandchildren, Katherine of Mission Viejo, Rachel (Tim) Shields of Albuquerque, Sara (James) Erb of Orchard Park, and Andrew (Lindsey) Schwingel of Webster; her four great granddaughters; her two step grandchildren – Andrew (Amelia) Hakes and Shannon (Clint) Campbell; four step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Carole Ann was pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Karen (Richard) Castellano and her brother Roger. She retired in 2005, following a 36 year career with the St. Joseph’s Parish in Wayland performing various bookkeeping and secretarial duties. She was also active on the parish finance and summer festival committees for many years. Carole Ann and Phil resided in Wayland until 2002, when they moved to a new home at Rolling Hills in Dansville. In 2019, they responded to the practical necessity for greater support and proximity to family, moving to independent living at St. John’s Meadows in Brighton where they stayed until a fall necessitated her move to a skilled nursing facility in mid-2023. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of her family. Carole Ann will be laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wayland, NY. The family is grateful to the Leo Center for Caring staff; the medical staff, aides and pastoral care team at St. Ann’s and the Rochester Regional Health Hospice team.
