Obituary of Philip F. Schwingel
Rochester / Wayland – Philip F. Schwingel, 93, passed away December 17, 2025 at St. Ann’s Community Rehab in Irondequoit, NY following a fall. Phil died three weeks after the passing of his wife, Carole Ann.
Phil was born May 16, 1932 in Wayland, NY, the son and youngest child of Augustus and Lena (Mehlenbacher) Schwingel. He developed his work ethic while working on the family farm in Wayland with his siblings and the many “county kids” that his parents fostered over the years. He was a 1950 graduate of Wayland Central School.
In May 1955, Philip Schwingel and Carole Ann Veith were wed at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland and celebrated 70 years of marriage this year. They resided in Wayland until 2002 when they moved to a new home at Rolling Hills in Dansville. In 2019, they responded to the practical necessity for greater support and proximity to family and moved to independent living at St. John’s Meadows in Brighton until their needs required other options and they relocated to St. Ann’s Community.
Phil spent virtually his entire working career at Foster Wheeler in Dansville, retiring in 1994. A congregant of St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland, where he enjoyed singing in the choir, Phil served on committees and volunteered for many projects at the church and school, including the annual summer festival.
A self-taught man with a strong work ethic, there was little that Phil couldn’t figure out. He loved to tinker and was never without a project to perfect. Following his retirement from Foster Wheeler, Phil was the caretaker for the two Catholic cemeteries in Wayland for several years. He also volunteered delivering for Meals on Wheels and served on the Wayland Village Board.
Philip was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Carole Ann, his sister Barbara (and brother-in-law George) Blanchard, and his brother Richard (and sister-in-law, Margaret). He is survived by his daughter Wendy of Chapel Hill, NC; and sons Alan (Nory) of Mission Viejo, CA; David (Darla) of Henrietta; Brian (Marlene) of Horseheads, and Gary (Kathleen) of Webster; his grandchildren, Katherine of Mission Viejo, CA; Rachel (Tim) Shields of Albuquerque, NM; Sara (James) Erb of Orchard Park and Andrew (Lindsey) Schwingel of Webster; his four great-granddaughters; his two step grandchildren – Andrew (Amelia) Hakes and Shannon (Clint) Campbell; and his four step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for both Philip and Carole Ann next year and both obituaries will be updated at that time. Phil will be laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wayland, NY.
The family is grateful to the staff at St. Ann’s Ranier Grove Memory Care in Webster and the Rochester Regional Health Hospice team. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Rochester Regional Health Hospice: https://www.rochesterregional.org/giving/make-a-gift.
