Obituary of Kay Wood Johantgen

Perkinsville – Kay Wood Johantgen, 87 years of age, passed away early Sunday morning, January 11, 2026, at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. Kay was born April 26, 1938, in Rochester, the daughter of George and Margaret (Grover) Wood. She grew up in Conesus and graduated from Livonia Central School in 1955. Kay continued her education, attending Keuka College and graduating from Rochester Business Institute. She worked for Foster Wheeler for several years and then the United States Post Office. Kay was Postmaster at several offices including Perkinsville and then retiring from the Springwater Post Office 2000 after 25 years of service. Kay and Carl Johantgen were married on January 25, 1958, and together celebrated over 49 years of marriage prior to Carl passing away on June 29, 2007. During the early years, Kay was a homemaker for her husband and three children, Kiera, Carl (Fred) and Bret. They all enjoyed camping as a family for many years. Kay was the matriarch of her family. She loved and cared for them all. Kay was the primary caregiver for her mother-in-law for many years and later she would take care of her grandchildren whenever needed. She loved quilting, collecting antiques and was a member of the Lowell Club. She was a school board member during the Wayland – Cohocton merger and she volunteered for Meals On Wheels. Other favorites of Kay were NASCAR races, the Dallas Cowboys and Wheel of Fortune! When Carl passed away, Kay and Lester Mastin began a companionship that has lasted 18 years. They enjoyed each other’s company and travelled to Florida for many winters. Kay was pre-deceased by her parents, George and Margaret Wood; her husband, Carl L. Johantgen; her sister Alice May and her brother Howard Wood. She is survived by her children, Kiera (Stephen) Kuhn of Wayland, Carl F. Johantgen (Julianne Oehlbeck) of Penfield and Bret Johantgen (Aimee Case) of Irondequoit; her grandchildren, Cotter, Cecilia, Nicholas, Joshua, Jayce, Foster and Davis; her brothers and sisters in law, Robert and Sue Conrad, Eluta VanScoter, Ceil (Don) Hamsher and Jerry (Glenna) Johantgen; along with many nieces and nephews. Kay’s family and friends may call Sunday January 18, 2026, from 5-8 pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday January 19th, 2026, at 11 am at Sacred Heart Church in Perkinsville. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Perkinsville.
