Obituary of Adam J. Engel Jr.
Perkinsville – Adam J. Engel Jr., 93 years of age, passed away Monday morning, December 8, 2014 at Highland Hospital in Rochester. Adam was born September 7th, 1921 in Perkinsville the son of Adam J. and Margaret (Bricks) Engel Sr. He grew up in Perkinsville and has remained a resident there his entire life.
Adam served his country during World War II in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged December 20th, 1945 after serving overseas in the Pacific Theatre which included the Philippines, New Guinea and the Northern Solomon Islands. Once back in the United States, Adam and Elizabeth “Betty” Didas were married on June 21, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church. Together Adam and Betty have celebrated over 62 years of marriage.
Adam’s employment career included over 40 years at the Gunlock Company in Wayland, retiring in 1983. He was life-long communicant of Sacred Heart Church and served as a trustee for the church for many years. Adam was a community volunteer assisting many organizations that included: caretaker of Sacred Heart Cemetery, Past President and Trustee of Perkinsville Fire Department, and now a life member of the department, Past President and member of the Perkinsville Rod-n-Gun Club, over 50 year membership of the Notre Dame Retreat League, member of the Wayland American Legion and a volunteer driver for Mercy Rural Ministry for dialysis patients. He was always providing a helping hand when needed. Adam enjoyed rabbit hunting and ice fishing over the years and he especially loved to garden. His vegetable garden was always plentiful and he would always share his bounty with the local community.
Adam was pre-deceased by his parents, Adam and Margaret Engel; a brother, Raymond Engel and a sister, Leona Mark. He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Engel of Perkinsville; his children, Nancy (Robert) Reigelsperger of Wayland, Jim Engel (Karen English) of Geneva and David (Robin) Engel of Springwater; his grandchildren, Ryan Reigelsperger of Wayland, Jill (Mitchell) Reid of Virginia Beach, VA, Amaris Elliot-Engel (Jason Rearick) of CT, and Jeremy Elliot-Engel of MO; his great-grandson, Landon Reid; his sister, Catherine Rauber (Robert Kuhn) of Wayland; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Sara) Didas of Perkinsville; along with several nieces and nephews.
Adam’s family and friends may call Friday from 1:00 – 3:00pm and 6:00 – 8:00pm at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A prayer service will be conducted Saturday at 10:15 at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Adam at 11:00am Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Perkinsville. Committal prayers, military honors and internment will take place immediately following at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Adam J.
