Obituary of Edward M. Gilbert
Springwater – Edward M. Gilbert, 94 years of age, passed away Wednesday evening November 28, 2018 at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Ed was born April 26, 1924 in Brighton, NY the son of Louis A. and Rose (Clark) Gilbert. He grew up in the Brighton/Rochester areas and moved to Springwater in 1961 where he has remained ever since. Ed and Geraldine Petersen were married in January 19, 1945 at the South Presbyterian Church in Rochester. His employment career spanned a couple different areas. He was a farmer in both Rochester and Springwater throughout the years; he owned and operated Ed’s Junk and Antiques for many years; and for 29 years, he was an instructor at Industry in Rochester, retiring in 1981 after 29 years.
His hobbies and adventures were many. He loved snowmobiling; played semi-pro football as well as high school football being named all greater Rochester honorable mention; raced stock cars; enjoyed deep sea fishing; lake fishing and hunting; participated in a bowling league for years belonging to a team that no one wanted to bowl against because they were “that good;” was champion of a horse shoes league for many years; loved playing cards especially euchre for nickel / dime antes; was a jack of all trades; was a snowbird to Florida for many years and loved spending time at their cottage in The 1000 Islands. Ed was also the president of the local CSEA for 12 years.
Ed was pre-deceased by his parents, Louis and Rose Gilbert; his wife, Geraldine Gilbert; his brother Louis Gilbert; a sister, Dorothy Helling; a nephew Louis “Skippy” Gilbert Jr.; and his two beloved dogs throughout the years, Max and Hoppy. He is survived by his children, Gary “Gibby” Gilbert, daughter Regina Holmes (Lynn) and son Ted Gilbert all of Springwater; his daughter-in-law, Cassie Dennison of Springwater; he was the grandfather “Boppa” to 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; his sister Rose Peterson of WA; his brother Roy Gilbert of Lima; along with several nieces and nephews.
Ed’s family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Saturday December 8, 2018 at 2pm, at the Springwater Church of the Nazarene. Interment will be private at Erwin Cemetery in Springwater. Contributions in memory of Edward M. Gilbert may be made to the Springwater Church of the Nazarene, 8498 Indian Valley Rd., Springwater, NY 14560.
