Obituary of Lawrence T. Lorenzo

Wayland – Rochester – Lawrence T. “Jazz” Lorenzo, 89 years of age, passed away early Monday afternoon, June 29th, 2015 at Strong Memorial Hospital. Jazz was born June 8th, 1926 in Wayland, the son of Frank and Rosa (Cacciatti) Lorenzo. He grew up in Wayland and lived on the same street there—East Avenue, even building his own house a few doors down from his childhood home--until he moved Rochester in 1999 to be closer to his grandchildren. Jazz served his country during World War II in the United States Navy from June 7th, 1944 until his honorable discharge May 24th, 1946. After his discharge, Jazz moved back to Wayland and married Edwina Beaupre on August 14th, 1954. Together they celebrated over 60 years of marriage. After stints at Gunlock in Wayland and even two years with the company in Los Angeles, Jazz spent the majority of his career working at SUNY Alfred as a carpenter and upholsterer, retiring in 1991 after 26 years with them. Many will remember Jazz as the town justice for 16 years also. Jazz was a devoted communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland, where he was baptized, confirmed and married, and St. Thomas Moore in Rochester. His hobbies were many throughout the years and most involved his hands and heart-- helping others through building and repairing. He enjoyed volunteering in the fire department, gardening, home improvement projects, playing golf and rooting for his favorite teams, the New York Yankees the New York Giants. As the years moved on however, his passion became spending time with his grandchildren, on the sidelines and in the audience at their sporting, dance and musical events. He made it his mission to make sure his grandchildren knew they were loved and learned to love themselves. Lawrence “Jazz” Lorenzo was pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Rosa Lorenzo; infant brothers, Vincent and Victor Lorenzo; sisters Christina Landino, Mary Lorenzo, Sara Lorenzo, Bettina Rinz and his brother, Francis “Bing” Lorenzo. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Edwina Lorenzo of Rochester; sons, Douglas Lorenzo of Angola and Luke (Robin) Lorenzo of Rochester; his grandchildren, Levi, Lucia and Lydia Lorenzo; his sister, Olga Hoag of Rocky Mt., NC; and many nieces and nephews. Jazz’s family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 10th at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland. Committal prayers, military honors and internment will take place immediately following at Old St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be offered to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572.
