Obituary of Joseph U. Newland

Dansville – Joseph Ulysses Newland, age 78, passed away Friday July 28, 2023. Joe was born in Hornell, NY the son of Ulyssses H. and Marian Estelle (Keyser) Newland. Joe attended Cornell University and after that he began a career in insurance working for Wausau Insurance Company and then on his own for a short period of time. He pursued many interests in life that included; gemology, horticulture and mining all across the United States. When not travelling about, building beautiful structures was his forte. He enjoyed cutting and polishing rocks of all kind; adding to his numerous collections; spending time in the woods; and mostly spending time with his grandchildren. Joe’s knowledge was extensive and he enjoyed passing that on to anyone who showed interest. He had a very caring soul and was always there to help someone in need. Joe’s love for life was contagious and will be missed by dear friends and family. Joe was pre-deceased by his parents; his adopted son, Jeffrey M. Newland; and a brother, Tim Newland. He is survived by his longtime devoted friend; Rebecca Saunders; his daughter in law, Lori Newland; his grandchildren, Ryder and Cooper; his brother Marty Newland; his sister, Judith Phillipson; along with many other relatives and friends. Joe’s family and friends will have a memorial service/celebration of life on Saturday September 23, 2023 at his home from 1-5pm.
