Obituary of Phyllis M. Meyer

Wayland – Phyllis G. Meyer, 89 years of age, passed away Friday afternoon at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren. Phyllis was born on October 24, 1933, in Amityville, NY, the daughter of John and Lillian (Strauss) Gozelski, Sr. She grew up in East Northport, Long Island, was an accomplished equestrian, and graduated from the Academy of St. Joseph in Brentwood, NY. Phyllis attended Alfred University, was the President of her sorority, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, History & Political Science. She continued her education at the State University of New York at Geneseo in pursuit of a master’s degree in education. Phyllis was a beloved kindergarten teacher at Lindenhurst School on Long Island for many years. After marrying Joseph L. Meyer on June 21st, 1958, at St. Anthony’s Church in East Northport, Phyllis moved to the local area and dedicated her life to raising her family of six children and working with her husband to build the family farming business (Joseph L Meyer & Sons, Inc.). Phyllis and Joe celebrated 52 years of marriage prior to him passing away December 10, 2010. Phyllis was pre-deceased by her parents, John and Lillian Gozelski, Sr.; her husband Joseph Meyer, Sr.; her brother, John Gozelski Jr., and her sister, Joan Cowan. She is survived by her loving children, Joseph (Mary) Meyer Jr. of Wayland, John Meyer Sr. of Cohocton, Melanie “Dee-Dee” Kuhn of Wayland, Melissa Meyer of Wayland, Rene (Gary) Meyer-North of Sarasota, FL, and Kristen Meyer of Reston, VA; her grandchildren, Rachel (Andrew) Burger, Joseph Meyer III, Ashley (Nick) Schumacher, John “Nick” Meyer Jr., Brian Meyer, Jerry (Lisa) Kuhn III, Morgan (Michael) Tota, Ryan (Danielle) Kuhn, Zachary North and Benjamin North; her great grandchildren, Jack Burger, Noah and Aubrey Schumacher, Tyler Meyer, Luca and Isabella Kuhn, Michael Jr., Blake, and Vincent Tota and Ryan Kuhn; along with several nieces and nephews. Phyllis’s family and friends may call Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 4-7 PM at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at 11 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, Wayland. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Phyllis G. Meyer may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572.
