Obituary of Katherine I. Wise
Cohocton – Wayland – Katherine Irene Wise, “Kaye,” 88 years of age, passed away late Wednesday evening, October 18, 2023 at the home of her daughter and son in law where she had been residing for the past 4 years.
Kaye was born March 3, 1935 at the family home on Lent Hill, the daughter of Norman H. and Elizabeth I. (Allen) Schneider. She grew up in Cohocton; graduated from Cohocton Central School in 1952 and has remained a resident all her life until her move to Wayland 4 years ago.
Kaye was a homemaker, housewife and mother and enjoyed odd jobs throughout the years. Kaye and DeMerle “Zip” Wise were married July 28, 1956 at St. Pius Church and celebrated over 53 years together prior to Zip passing away October 31, 2009.
Kaye was the matriarch and pillar of St. Pius Church in Cohocton. That honor will be passed on but very difficult to replace. She taught religious education; was a past member of the Rosary and Altar Society; a Fall Foliage Festival committee member; as well as a member of the CDC. Kaye enjoyed her flower gardens and all kinds of crafts that she would often donate to charities for fundraisers. Homemade Christmas ornaments were family favorites as well as recently her many beautiful paintings.
Kaye’s volunteering at church and her many hobbies did not deter her from raising her children and others within her family when the situation arose. The love of her church, family, friends and community will be missed but a legacy has been left.
Kaye was pre-deceased by her parents, Norman and Elizabeth Schneider; her husband DeMerle “Zip;” her granddaughter, Acacia Wise; her great granddaughter, Faith Pruett; her siblings, Noreen Lindsey, Anne Hamilton, John Schneider, Mike Schneider, Frank Schneider, Ed Schneider and Mary Weber. She is survived by her children, Joe (Toni) Wise of Pittsfield, IL, Cathy (Greg) Azzi of Cohocton, Margie (Bob) Adams of Wayland, Andy (Terri) Wise of Hammondsport and her nephew that was like a son to her, Randy Hamilton of Cohocton; 14 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; her siblings, Dorothy Reinhard of Kane, PA, Jean (Tom) Recktenwald of Wayland, James (Leslie) Schneider of FL and Elaine (James) Davis of Elkland, PA; her sister in law Margaret (Richard) Schwingle of MI; many many nieces and nephews; and many “Angel Caregivers” throughout the years.
Kaye's family and friends may call Monday October 23, 2023 from 4-7pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Kay on Tuesday morning, October 24, 2023 at 10am at St. Pius Church, Cohocton. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at St. Pius Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Kaye truly believed in giving. Some of her favorite charities were:
