Obituary of John H. Murphy Jr.
Avoca – Cohocton – John H. Murphy Jr., 71 years of age, passed away early Thursday morning November 12th, 2015 at Corning Guthrie Hospital in Corning.
John was born July 6th, 1944 in Bath the son of John H. Sr. and Dorothy (Glover) Murphy. He grew up and has resided in the Avoca/Cohocton area his entire life. He was a 1962 graduate of Avoca Central School and attended Northwestern University as an engineering student. John and Joyce Zeh were married February 3rd, 1968 and together have celebrated over 47 years of marriage. His employment career was entirely spent as a civil engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation out of the Hornell office retiring after 40 years of service. John was instrumental in the building of many roads, bridges and bypasses in the Southern Tier throughout the years. Upon his retirement, he was a consultant for Hunt Engineers.
John enjoyed woodworking and he was an avid trap shooter. He also enjoyed hunting throughout the years. John was a volunteer in the Cohocton Lions Club for over 45 years, holding many offices at both the local and district level. He also was a member of the Cohocton American Legion, the Springwater Rod-n- Gun Club and a communicant of St. Pius Church in Cohocton.
John was pre-deceased by his parents; and a brother, Michael Murphy. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Murphy of Avoca; his daughter, Christine (Patrick) Murphy of Trumansburg and his son, Patrick (Suanne) Murphy of Bolivar; his grandchildren, Megan, Kaitlyn and Madison Feely, Justine Cole (Kyle Weidemann), Austin, Emma and Taylor Murphy; his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Hunter and Jase Weidemann; his brothers, James Murphy of Ithaca and Terry (Anne) Murphy of Conesus; his sister, Patricia (George) Thompson of Delhi; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Karl (Waltraud) Zeh of Little Rock, AR, Don (Onlee) Zeh of Cohocton and Gerald (Judy) Zeh of Cohocton; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
John’s family and friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00pm at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for John Wednesday at 10:00am at St. Pius Church in Cohocton. Committal prayers and internment will take place immediately following at St. Pius Cemetery. Memorial contributions in John H. Murphy’s memory may be made to the Cohocton Lions Club, PO Box 349, Cohocton, NY 14826 or to the Sons of American Legion, Lifeline Account, 4212 State Rte. 21,Wayland, NY 14572.
