Obituary of Elizabeth A. Young

Cohocton – Prattsburgh – Elizabeth Ann Slade Young, “Betty” 98 years of age, passed away Tuesday April 22, 2024 at the Steuben Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Bath. Betty was born April 13, 1926 in Stamford, CT the daughter of Kendall and Mary (Donovan) Slade. She grew up in the Springwater, Conesus and Wayland areas often residing with different relatives. On April 12, 1948 Betty and Harvey Young were married and she moved to Cohocton. Betty and Harvey celebrated over 38 years of marriage prior to Harvey passing away in 1987. In 1990 she moved to Prattsburgh where she resided until her recent move to the Steuben Center in Bath. Betty owned and operated her own hair dressing business for over 50 years. Even after “retiring” from her business she still worked at her craft for many more years. Her hobbies were many. During her long life, Betty was a turkey farmer, a decorative painter, a candy maker, an avid gardener, an excellent cook, and a hairdresser. She was active in her church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Prattsburgh, as well as several other organizations and social groups. Betty was a fun, feisty woman with a great sense of humor and will be sorely missed by everyone that knew her. Betty was pre-deceased by her parents; her daughter and son in law Mary Jane and Harry Kukuk; and her brother, Raymond Paul Slade. She is survived by her grandchildren, Wendy (Christopher) Weckler of WI and John “Jack” (Emma Purton) Kukuk of WI; her great grandchildren, Timothy John “TJ” and Olivia, her niece Ann Slade and nephews Tim Slade and Daniel (Judy) Slade; and her special friends, Pat Spooner and Arleen Hollas. Betty’s family and friends may call Thursday May 2, 2024 from 10am – 11am at St. Patrick’s Church, 47 North Main St., Prattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Betty at the conclusion of calling hours at 11am at St. Patrick’s Church. Committal prayers and interment will take place at St. Pius Cemetery in Cohocton. Contributions in memory of Elizabeth Ann Young may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, 47 N. Main St., Prattsburgh, NY 14873.
