I opened the newspaper this morning to the obituaries and saw the picture of Robert Hughes. It was quite long but I thought that he was probably a special, interesting man of the world. Boy, was I right! I just want to say that the world was such a better place with him in it and that we need more people like him. I was very enthralled with all his accomplishments and great deeds and especially that he was so frugal with all that he had. Some of us are still like that. May Bob sing with the angels and may the rest of us take note of a very special man. Even though you don't know me my heart and prayers go to the family and friends. Peace.

To say I'm sorry for your loss just doesn't capture what I feel and what I want express. Growing up the Hughes family was quite literally my 2nd family, and mom-mom and boppie were as much my grandparents as my own. I am so saddened to hear of this loss, but I take solace in the fact that I know boppie lived an amazing and full life. I will cherish the memories of summers at the lake with everyone and feeling loved as if I was your own flesh and blood. I love that mom mom and boppie stay(ed) young and fun for all their years. Weekends at the lake are very special memories to me. I always felt welcome and loved. Stories and dinner table conversations got a little crazy and I loved that.
To mom mom: keep that wonderful smile and joyful spirit and know that you will see your love again someday. I know you are a strong woman and you have your family to love and support you in this hard time.
To boppie: rest in peace. Sending love up to you.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I am only one of many students who were fortunate to be taught/counseled by both Mr. & Mrs. Hughes. Although I did not know Mr. Hughes out of the Wayland Central School setting, I have always been grateful for his (and Mrs. Hughes') help and counsel during my years at WCS. After my family's car accident I went though some pretty hard times. It was knowing that people cared, not only about my education, but also about me, personally, that got me through that very difficult time and I have always been so grateful. I have never forgotten. Mrs. Hughes, you might be surprised to know that I did, indeed, eventually have the chance to "pay it forward." I worked at Monroe Community College for over 22 years as a word processor (the last of the dinosaurs) in a role of assisting MCC faculty with their course materials, so you and your husband's love and tutelage DID come full circle in my eventual career. And you will also be pleased to know that I did not become a blockhead (even though I still do not know the names and terms of all the United States presidents so don't quiz me--although I did marry a man who DOES know and yes, he is a Jeopardy fan)! I am hopeful that I can come to the calling hours to pay my respects to the family. I know that I will be only one of many who owe so much to this man.

Mr. Hughes was one of the best teachers I had at Wayland Central School. He taught me that history is a series of stories about people whether they lived in the middle ages or the Middle East or the middle of his vivid imagination. Those people and their stories came to life in his World History class in Room 208 at Wayland High School. I have on many occasions delightedly enlightened people as to why gentlemen always walk on the outside when strolling down the street with their female counterparts. It was Mr. Hughes who painted the enduring picture of the people of the Middle Ages throwing their slops out their windows onto the street below. So of course any self respecting gentleman of that time would want to shelter the more delicate members of the opposite sex and keep them from getting an unwanted shower! And that practice has been handed down through the ages. I don't know why that image stuck with me for all these years, but I can inevitably dazzle someone in almost any social situation with that story - and all thanks to Mr Hughes, world history teacher extraordinaire!!!
His obituary, so well written, really says it all. I would only say "Amen" to the description of his character, a hard working, honest, diligent role model who was a truly gifted and talented and dedicated teacher. Thank you Mr Hughes for such a life so well lived. We were lucky to have you as one of our teachers at Wayland Central School.
