Obituary of Maxine R. Averill
Wayland – Maxine R. Averill, 88 years of age, passed away late Friday morning, April 8th, 2016 at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Maxine was born November 7th, 1927 in Hornellsville the daughter of Jesse and Lillian (Whitford) Clark. She grew up in Hornellsville and Andover. Maxine resided in Almond for over 17 years and in 1964, she moved to Wayland, residing there for the rest of her life. However, living in Almond was a very important part of her life. She had many life-time friends from that area that she has remained in touch with her entire life. Maxine and Clayton Averill were married September 13th, 1947 in Hornell and together they celebrated over 53 years of marriage prior to Clayton passing away in October of 2000.
Maxine’s employment included a few different areas. She worked for two years at the Gunlocke Company in Almond; was the Almond Deputy Town Clerk for two years; a secretary and book keeper for The Percy McIntosh John Deere Dealership; and she was a computer operator and bookkeeper at the First National Bank in Wayland retiring after 22 years.
While in both Almond and Wayland, Maxine was a member of the United Methodist Church of both communities. She taught Sunday school for over 20 years; was very active in day to day running of the churches while holding different offices. Maxine was also a past president, treasurer and member of the DAN-WAY-COA twins club. Along with her dedication to her family and church, Maxine also had many hobbies. She loved her gardens; both flowers and vegetable. She would can, freeze and process all her vegetables for the family. She loved music and also had a love of animals, especially her cats. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend that will be missed by all.
Maxine was pre-deceased by her parents; her husband, Clayton Averill; a son Daniel Averill; and a brother Paul Clark. She is survived by her son, Dale Averill and his wife Kathryn (Wood) of Wayland, her daughters, Ellen Averill of Wayland, Elaine Averill of Wayland, Nancy Banker and her husband Richard of Canisteo; her daughter-in-law, Christine (Taylor) Averill of TX; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Fred) Grambs of Wayland, Laura (Jamie) Freese of Livonia, Steven Averill of Beaverdams, NY, Thomas Averill of Wayland, Jason (Marsha) Averill of MD, Lisa Zimmerman of TX, Caitlan (Paul) Congdon of Rochester, and Brianna (Anthony) Westbrook of Canisteo; many great-grandchildren; her brothers, Carl (Reva) Clark of Andover and Roy (Jane) Halsey of MO; along with many nieces and nephews.
Maxine’s family and friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Her funeral service will be Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Wayland United Methodist Church with the Reverand Osceola Wharton officiating. Committal services and interment will immediately follow at Pleasant Valley East Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Maxine R. Averill’s memory may be made to the Wayland United Methodist Church, 3 East Ave, Wayland, NY 14572.
