Obituary of Austin H. Saxton

Loon Lake – Austin H. Saxton, 91 years of age, passed away Monday February 20, 2017 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Austin was born January 15, 1926 near Loon Lake, the son of Edwin M. Sr. and Vernie J. (Marsh) Saxton. Austin and Laura Lyke were married November 22, 1953 at the North Cohocton United Methodist Church. Together they celebrated over 62 years of marriage prior to Laura passing on March 29, 2016. Austin and Laura resided in the Loon Lake area their entire married life. Austin grew up on the family farm near Loon Lake and continued to have a love of farming his entire life. His employment career spanned into many other areas as well. He drove tractor trailer for Fleischman-Witter & Co..and then went on to work at the Foster Wheeler Corporation in Dansville for over 20 years. During this time he also owned and operated the Boat House at Loon Lake. Austin later became intrigued with antiques and went on to open Saxton’s Antiques in Cohocton. During retirement he tended to his produce stands and loved spending time outdoors whether it was farming, gardening or cutting firewood. Austin’s vivid memory allowed him to share many stories with his family and friends. In addition to his wife and parents Austin was pre-deceased by his brother, Edwin M. Saxton Jr.. He is survived by his children, Richard (Lynn) Saxton, Jane (Walt) Barber, Carol (Mayo) Carrington, Keith (Sandra) Saxton, Kevin (Deborah) Saxton, Ronald (Janette) Saxton, Gary (Christina) Saxton, Beth (Kenneth) Reynolds, Teresa (Charles) Venn; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his nephew and sister-in-law, Chuck and Mary Etta Saxton; and his brother-in-law, Eldon Lyke; along with many nieces and nephews. Austin’s family and friends may call Friday February 24, 2017 from 4-7pm at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Funeral service to be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 97 Maple Ave, Cohocton, NY. Private committal prayers and interment will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, Loon Lake.
