I enjoyed, during my childhood, living just down the street from the Dutchesses! I often got to go over to visit and play. It was one of our favorite stops on Halloween and whenever we had 4H items to sell. During my school years, Mr. Dutchess was one of the educators I knew I could trust and go to if I needed anything. We sure have missed them after they moved away from Wayland but always have remembered both Mr. and Mrs. D! Enjoy those baseball games from your new view! Hugs to Mrs. D and your girls

A better man you could never find. He taught me how to throw a curveball! Tom will be missed forever by so many people that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Tom was a great boss, a good friend and a fine educator. He legacy is the career in education that touched students, athletes and faculty and staff. Sad to hear of his passing. I'm sure he's grinning and looking down on us all.

Thanks Peter and Catherine. Tom loved teaching and coaching and even through the hard times, he just kept pushing onward. He is sincerely missed by many.
Loving him for 62 years has made his passing even more difficult but he would want me to put one foot in front of the other and that I will do.

Mr. Dutchess was my 8th grade social studies teacher. I ate lunch in his room almost everyday until I graduated. I trusted him and cared for him deeply. He was funny and lighthearted when I needed a laugh and intense and knowledgeable when I needed solutions. He helped me decide my college plans and truly cared about my future. He taught me more than history. He taught me the importance of human connection. He made me feel smart and important and worthy. I wrote my college entrance essay about his positive influence in my life. And I’m not surprised that I ended up becoming a middle school social studies teacher myself. Every year, for the past 16 years, I’ve told my students about him and how he changed my life with the simplicity of genuinely caring. I hope he knew how much his guidance, concern and kindness were appreciated. The ripple effect of his goodness is immeasurable. I haven’t seen him in 20 years, but I can still see his face and hear his laugh so clearly in my mind. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones.

Jessica, even though Tom was very sick for too many months, he did KNOW how much he had influenced his students and athletes. Many shared their feelings as they knew he was deteriorating and he knew that. How very uplifting to know that BEFORE you depart and not have it being said at your memorial service.
Thank you so much for sharing your very insightful thoughts and deep admiration.
I loved him for 62 years and he will be remembered by many forever.

Mr. D was a one of those principals you never forget. He took the time to care for his students. I had the privilege of playing softball for a few years with Tom as my coach. Not only did he teach the game but he taught respect, leadership, and the value of sportsmanship. He held a very special place in my heart and I will treasure the memories. My prayers and love sent to Jean, Angie, and Annie. RIP Mr. Dutchess-your truly deserve it.

The best principal I’ve ever had. He always made it a point to talk to you when he seen you. He would really listen to what you had to say, and always treated me with kindness. His family are in my prayers.
